About this Talk

Kindness is often confused with niceness but it's so much more complex than that, particularly in the workplace. We may feel we are being kind if we: - avoid conversations that may make people feel uncomfortable - do not set boundaries to avoid upsetting someone - taking on someone else's tasks to lighten their load but instead make our own load heavier leading to resentment (I will give a real example here to illustrate the above) Kindness isn't a pink and fluffy concept. It's a skill and a quality that we can develop and nurture to create psychologically safe workplaces where we communicate clear expectations Kindness is a skill we can practise, and it starts with learning to listen deeply and creating a sense of psychological safety where everyone feels free to raise questions or concerns, building trust and a culture where people feel supported and valued even when things don't go to plan. This 20 minute session will offer examples from the workplace where kindness (perceived as niceness or people pleasing) often leads to miscommunication, confusion and potentially distress. The session will also offer practical strategies for the concept of kindness as clarity. Tags: Talk, Psychological Safety, Technology & AI, Everyday Kindness
